Entry #10 Shows or Movies?

Image
The question “Are you a movie or a show person?” has plagued me for years. I often have phases where I am either one or the other. They both have their pros and cons, and it’s hard to choose one over the other. However, after extensive thought and reflection on my past watching habits, I’ve come to my final answer. Shows are better than movies. I find that, with shows, you are able to get to know the character better. You get to see their personality shine through more, and it feels like you know them more personally. You’re able to see them more as an actual person than a fictional character, making it easier to relate to them and their experiences. As the show progresses, you get to see how the characters grow and progress as they combat any struggles they face. Of course, in movies, you’re also able to witness this, but not to the extent that you do in shows. It can sometimes feel restricted and not live up to the expectations I had. I...

Entry #9 Food Comic

Image
With so many food brands available in the grocery store, it’s important to check to see what goes into our food. We should be aware of what we’re putting into our bodies and make choices that are healthier for ourselves. What we eat directly impacts our health. Many food companies focus more on making money than on providing nutritious or ethically made products. This means that profit often takes priority over the well-being of consumers. In this comic, two men are shown in a grocery store looking at the ingredients list on the back of a can. The man on the right says the ingredients are put in order of importance, to which the man on the left retorts, asking what’s after profit. He insinuates that corporations don’t care about their consumers. This comment emphasizes the idea that many companies prioritize maximizing profits over the quality and healthiness of their products. That usually entails using low-quality, highly processed ingredients. This comic ...

The Importance of Living in the Moment

Image
When we’re young, it’s ingrained in our heads that we should always be thinking about the future. Whether it’s about school, work, or our health, there is always something we should be worrying about. While I think that it’s important to have a plan and keep these things in mind, I think it’s equally, if not more, important to live in the moment and enjoy life as it is. Constantly planning for what may happen instead of focusing on what is happening can be incredibly overwhelming. Living in the present allows you to enjoy life for what it is. An overemphasis on the future can drain joy out of everyday life. When people become fixated on what comes next, they stop appreciating what’s right in front of them. Being present can strengthen your relationships with friends, family, and loved ones. You’re able to combat each bump in the road as it happens. It can also reduce stress and improve your mental health. Practicing mindfulness helps you stay grounded in the present. It enhances...

The Film "Fresh"

Image
The 2009 film Fresh , which focuses on the many harms caused by industrial agriculture, opened my eyes to how little I knew about food production. The thing that stuck with me the most from Fresh was how poorly animals are treated. I had never considered what went on behind the scenes of the food I see at the grocery store every day. Because of this film, I realized that there was a sort of disconnect between me and food. For example, the meat in the grocery was nothing more to me than just meat. It was just one of the many things I could buy at the store. It never really crossed my mind that it was actually part of something living and breathing. Fresh opened my eyes to the reality of how the meat got to the shelves. It shows the terrible living conditions the animals have to live in before they’re taken for consumption. The film does a good job showing how overcrowded the animal farms are and reinforces the idea that most farms are more profit-driven instead of caring for thei...

Entry #6 Hershey Park

Image
If you’re a fan of rollercoasters and theme parks, you should put Hershey Park as one place to visit. Out of the parks that I’ve been to, it’s one of my favorites. I may be a little biased, though, as I grew up in Pennsylvania and have gone there more times than I can count. But I think that in itself is a testament to how fun the rides there are! Spanning across 121 acres, Hershey Park has over seventy rides with fourteen rollercoasters, a waterpark, and even a zoo. There’s something for everyone. Just earlier this year, in May, the park opened a new ride called the Twizzler Twisted Gravit y ride. It’s a giant swing that stands 137 feet tall and swings you back and forth up to 68 miles per hour! I went there in June, but didn't get to ride it since the wait time was up to two hours ! If you were to go in the summer like I did, I’d definitely recommend getting the fast pass as well. It can save you from waiting too long in PA's hot and sticky air.     Apart from this n...

Entry #5 Allstate Visual Rhetoric

Image
Allstate’s “ Mayhem: Baseball Dad” ad uses humor and chaos to show why insurance is important for unexpected accidents. The ad revolves around a male character who is "mayhem" personified. He is shown as the typical dad who takes his kids’ sports games a little too seriously. In this ad, he is behind the fence of his kid’s baseball game, trying to show him how to swing the bat, when the bat he is holding suddenly flies out of his hand and hits a parked car in the parking lot. Although the delivery of the accident may be a bit unrealistic, it shows how fast things can happen. The fastest part of the ad is when the bat flies away, showing that accidents are sudden and unpredictable. That moment creates a sense of surprise for the audience, showing how easily everyday situations can spiral out of control. The setting of the ad also plays a key role in its message about the need for insurance. It is set at a regular baseball field, a place where people wouldn’t normally expe...

Entry #4 Romcoms

Image
If I could only watch one movie genre for the rest of my life, it would have to be romantic comedy. I love the lightheartedness of it and, as bad as this sounds, I like the cheesiness of it. It’s my guilty pleasure. There’s something comforting about the mix of humor, awkward moments, and heartfelt romance.      The best romcoms to watch are the ones from the 90s and early 2000s. There’s something about them that new romcoms just can’t emulate. They have a charm that keeps the audience watching, despite being pretty predictable what will happen next. Maybe it’s nostalgia, or the writing, but those older romcoms just feel more genuine. They make you root for the characters and believe in the story, even when it’s over the top. The plots in newer romcoms are often lacking and feel flat. We viewers don't feel any sort of connection to the characters in the story, which makes the movie less interesting to watch.       There are tons of ...
