Entry #4 Romcoms

If I could only watch one movie genre for the rest of my life, it would have to be romantic comedy. I love the lightheartedness of it and, as bad as this sounds, I like the cheesiness of it. It’s my guilty pleasure. There’s something comforting about the mix of humor, awkward moments, and heartfelt romance.

The best romcoms to watch are the ones from the 90s and early 2000s. There’s something about them that new romcoms just can’t emulate. They have a charm that keeps the audience watching, despite being pretty predictable what will happen next. Maybe it’s nostalgia, or the writing, but those older romcoms just feel more genuine. They make you root for the characters and believe in the story, even when it’s over the top. The plots in newer romcoms are often lacking and feel flat. We viewers don't feel any sort of connection to the characters in the story, which makes the movie less interesting to watch.

There are tons of cult classics from this era, such as 13 Going on 30, 10 Things I Hate About You, When Harry Met Sally, and 27 Dresses. However, out of the hundreds that were pumped out during this era, my all-time favorite romcom would have to be How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It’s a cult classic for a reason! The chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey is unbeatable. The banter between each character feels natural and is enjoyable to listen to. The ridiculous lengths Kate Hudson's character goes to to try to get Matthew McConaughey's character to leave her are entertaining and funny to watch. This movie has the right amount of comedy, romance, and charm that keeps me coming back to rewatch, no matter how many times I've seen it.

Even though romcoms today don’t quite hit the same, I’ll never get tired of rewatching the classics. They’re the perfect comfort movies to chill out to and watch on a cold and dreary day. The saying "an oldie but a goodie" is a thing for a reason!

  1. I am also guilty of enjoying romcoms. Something about them is so satisfying. I'm curious, have you ever seen "Me Before You" or read it? That one was one of my favorites. Not to mention 10 Things I Hate About You.
